Previously known as Quart Pot Creek, a mining rush in 1872 gave Stanthorpe its name: stannum is Latin for tin and thorp is English for village. The town of Stanthorpe (pop. 5500) is now the beating heart of the Granite Belt with a rich multicultural and agricultural heritage. It has a compact downtown area that is best explored on foot.

HISTORY + HERITAGE

WINERIES
You don’t need to leave Stanthorpe to have a wine experience. The Queensland College of Wine Tourism showcases the region’s dedication to continuous improvement in wine quality and tourism. It is also home to the Banca Ridge Bistro, Cellar Door and Function Centre, and ‘Winemaker for the Weekend’ courses.
ART, CRAFT + CULTURE
In Stanthorpe you will discover you’ll discover an amazing range of cafes, shops and gift stores, art galleries. A visit to the Stanthorpe Regional Art Galleries which houses works from prominent Queensland artists and even a Picasso lithograph, along with rotating exhibitions, won’t disappoint. Opposite is the Weeroona Art and Craft Gallery packed with mostly local fine art and crafts - metalwork, woodwork, paintings in oils and mixed media, and gorgeous quilts and needlework. On the outskirts of town is the Stanthorpe Pottery Club on Wallangara Road which is open to the public from 10am-1pm every Sunday plus offers workshops during the school holidays. Off Amosfield Road is Carmelo’s Pottery. Carmelo is a self taught wheel-thrown potter which makes his pieces different from any other potter. You can also enjoy a large collection of antiques. On display are over 100 old Movie Camera's, 50 Projectors, 80 Beautiful Chinese Teapots and other local memorabilia.
Stanthorpe's Market in the Mountains is your one-stop shop to sample local art, craft and produce under the theme of 'Make it, Bake it, Sew it, or Grow it'. The markets are held at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre on 2nd and 4th Sunday's of the month, and on long weekends, from 9am - 1pm.
NATURE + ADVENTURE
Flowing through the town is Quart Pot Creek, with more than 5km of walking and cycling tracks with great picnic and bbq areas. Why don’t you pack a picnic of our fabulous gourmet picnic and relax under a willow tree. If you have young children feed the local ducks and water dragons, or discover the Kidspace playground at Kilpa Street.
And remember the Granite Belt’s gourmet and wine experiences and our quaint villages and hamlets are just a short drive away.
