South - Eukey, Mt Tully + Storm King Dam
|
This region is perfect for nature and adventure lovers.
HISTORY + HERITAGE
Eukey was originally called Paddock Swamp. It was one of many in an area 22 km by 13 km believed to be rich mining land and in 1872 a sample of tin was taken from Paddock Swamp (Eukey) and sent to Warwick. It took a quarter of a century for a school to open here (1897) and even longer (1906) for it to be included on the preaching list for the Presbyterian minister from Warwick. It was in 1917 that the name changed from Paddock Swamp to Eukey, the name borne by the school until its closure in 1964.
NATURE + ADVENTURE
Storm King Dam is a short drive south-east from the centre of Stanthorpe town. Usually this is well-stocked with Murray Cod, Yellow Belly, Silver Perch, Spangled Perch and Eel-tailed catfish with fishing permits available locally from sporting stores and service stations. Storm King Dam is also a popular spot for water skiing, canoeing, kayaking, and rowing. Permits for boating on Storm King Dam are available from the Southern Downs Regional Council. You can hire canoes from Sommerville Valley Tourist Park.
With the abundant wild life and outdoor activities your stay in Eukey and surround areas makes for a memorable getway. From Eukey you can enter the northern part of the renown Girraween National Park. Girraween truly is a paradise for bushwalkers and explorers, and ideal for scenic walks, wildlife viewing, camping and picnics. During spring it blooms with flowers and shrubs attracting birds, wombats, lizards and wallabies.
