South - Ballandean
|
Ballandean is renowned for its picturesque setting and the Granite Belt’s largest number of award winning winemakers.
HISTORY + HERITAGE
Balladean, which also sits along the railway line, was home to some of the earliest Italian settlers, who recognised the region for its ability to grow table grapes and stone fruit.
ART, CRAFT + CULTURE
Ballandean Estate Wines is host to the famous Opera in the Vineyard each May and Jazz in the Vineyard each August. Celebrate harvest in autumn at Golden Grove’s Sicilian Vintage Lunch.
GRAZE THE GRANITE BELT
A perfect way to experience the food of the region is to enjoy a taste plate at the Cellar Door Cafe at Mason Wines. In winter get cosy around their massive fireplace. If lunch at a winery appeals, eat among historic barrels at the Barrel Room Cafe, Ballendean Estate or visit Hidden Creek with its gorgeous views over a quaint lake. They also offer regular food and wine events including their famous Game Keeper Dinners. Next door, Golden Grove also presents regular degustation events. Shiraz Restaurant and the Vineyard Cafe are two superb restaurants with great acclaim conveniently located in the town of Ballandean.
The area is also home to Australia's best vinegar producer Lirah (sorry, not open to the public).
NATURE + ADVENTURE
Don't miss our little bit of Egypt - drive past our famous hand-made pyramid. Go fishing along the Severn River or the amazing Girrawen National Park and rugged Sundown National Park are only a short drive away.
WINERIES, BREWERIES + DISTILLERIES
Start with the Sundown Road. It offers some of the best wineries in the Granite Belt including Granite Ridge, Tobin, Golden Grove and the region’s oldest winery Ballandean Estate. On Eukey Road visit Hidden Creek and Just Red Wines. This road is also home to Twisted Gum (not open to the public). Further along is Symphony Hill offering music to the palate. To the north, get a taste of Africa at Rumbalara Estate Wines. If you are after a biodynamic wine with no animal products visit Wild Soul. One of the first wineries in the region, Bungawarra Wines has Muscat vines that are over 80 years old.
