North - Dalveen

This tiny village – a multi-winner of the Tidy Towns awards, lies at the northern edge of the Granite Belt. Local historian Jean Harslett records that in 1881 the construction of the new Southern Border Railway Line began and it employed 900 people, creating the establishment of a post office at Dalveen. The postal and rail ties continued as a Mr J.S. Kingsford, fulfilled the dual task of post and station master for a period of 19 years. Two mail services emanated in this time, one from Dalveen and one to the Pikedale road and school house six times a week.

The Dalveen State School was established in 1878 and survives today. It houses a multi-purpose sports facility which complements the cricket pitch. The school, together with the post office and village shop/craft centre form the heart of the village and this has been enhanced by a new bush fire brigade centre. The tiny community of Dalveen is home to an energetic quilting group and the enthusiastic sports committee who convene for drinks every Friday night in the village hall.
