In the early spring, gardens and orchards in the Granite Belt are a blaze of blossom and wild flowers; in the summer the paddocks are full of produce; by autumn the landscape is a punctuated by with autumn colours, and in the winter the morning mists and frosts will have you snuggling by the fire with a good bottle of Granite Belt red.
Gardening in the Granite Belt and Stanthorpe is vastly different from our near neighbours in Brisbane due to our seasonal climate. The cooler climate enables English-style gardens, where wisteria, roses, hydrangeas and camellias bloom profusely, and Stanthorpe parks are dotted with the magnificent colours of the deciduous oaks.
Despite the harsh conditions in the Granite Belt, there are some beautiful gardens open as part of the Australian Open Gardens Scheme in and around Stanthorpe throughout the year. Check their calendar to see who is showing this year.
The Granite Belt is home to several successful lavender farms which offer a visual feast of colour between November and April. These lavender farms are open to the public offering various visitor services as well as producing lavender of some reknown. Buses are welcome but it is recommended that you book in advance to enable operators to provide the personal attention to your guests which they deserve. The Granite Belt’s most popular gardens are:
And finally for the ultimate natural garden experience ... take a walking trail through the Granite Belt’s national parks. Park rangers host guided tours during wildflower season each year.
