Welcome to Queensland's premier wine region where culinary tourism is the latest initiative to be dished up Granite Belt Wine & Tourism Inc. (GBWT) as part of its push to tap into Australians’ continuing fascination with food.
At the Inaugural Granite Belt Food Forum on 4 June 2008, the GBWT takes a holistic view of the paddock to plate opportunity under the guidance of Peter Howard, one of Australia's best known food and wine commentators.
Mr Howard – who has visited the Granite Belt since childhood - said this intitiave builds on the area's great food producing heritage. He said, “Establishing a food group is a fabulous step forward for the GBWT. Once again they are showing leadership and are to be congratulated on taking the initiative." The first industry food forum will be held on 4 June 2008 - click here to email an enquiry.
The association's mission is to develop a sustainable tourism industry on the Granite Belt and as food and wine are the perfect partners. The move is seen as a natural development for the the region which will benefit from the involvement of Mr Howard who consults to industry and government organisations on hospitality and tourism issues.
The Granite Belt is keen to learn from other successful regional food destinations such as Orange in NSW which have developed a range of activities including food trails, signature dishes, growers markets, slow food groups and cooking competitions. Under Peter Howard's guidance the Forum will explore these and other activiites as part of building a strategy for regional food in the Granite Belt to embrace the paddock to plate opportunity.
