Food Tourism

Long before the Granite Belt gained a reputation as a wine region it had established a multi-million dollar horticultural and agricultural industry.

When visitors look at the granite soil of Queensland's apple and grape capital they wonder anything grows here!

Queensland's premier wine region is now engaged in developing culinary tourism, a perfect partnership between wine and food. The project is part of Granite Belt Wine & Tourism's (GBWT) mission to develop sustainable toruism on the Granite Belt and is being led by Peter Howard.  Peter is one of Australia's best known food andw ine commentators who consults to industry and government organisations on hospitality and tourism issues.

The Granite Belt is keen to learn from other successful regional food destinations and looks to regions like Orange in NSW for inspiration.

The region's food tourism strategy began at the inaugural Granite Belt Food Forum on 4 June 2008.  This is when GBWT formalised its holistic view of the paddock to plate. The result is the introduction of a series of food initiatives such as Farmers Markets, fresh produce calendar, and a fact sheet for media.  Coming soon is a food trail.
