Casual outdoor activities prove most popular for families, whether it is feeding the ducks along Quart Pot Creek, watching kangaroos at the Stanthorpe Golf & Country Club or birdwatching from the privacy of your country cottage, B&B or campsite.
If you are looking for a little more excitement then there are a number of major events which regularly attract families, including these:
- Stanthorpe is home to the iconic Apple & Grape Harvest Festival. This biennial street party is held over three days and provides something for everyone. Locals love it, visitors love it. The next Apple & Grape will be held 7-9 March 2008.
- The Stanthorpe Show - the annual event will next be held 1-3 February 2008 and provides a showcase of everything the Granite Belt has to offer. For some the attraction is to see the livestock, the horse events, or to feel the superfine Traprock wool, for others it is to sample the wine and cheese, marvel at the arts and crafts or the gardners handiwork. Others want the thrill of sideshow alley and others to be entertained at the novelty dog show. Finally visit the produce pavillion to see who has taken home the prize for champion fruit or vegetables. The Stanthorpe Agricultural Show Society organises all of this and this event has got it all in one place.
- For the more adventurous you can explore the Granite Belt Maze which was planted late last century and there is a children's maze for the little ones. A giant chess board and a variety of puzzles to stimulate the mind. The Maze is situated 8.6kms north of Stanthorpe CBD along the Old Warwick Rd at The Summit, which is one of the Granite Belt's highest points, at over 900 metres above sea level. This makes it one of Australia's highest mazes. Nestled in the Queensland wine capital it is easily accessible from the region's accommodation and other tourist attractions.
- The Market in the Mountains - held the second Sunday of each month, ambling through the Civic Centre you can pick up great handmade items which stall holders have made, baked or sewn.
- The Stanthorpe Cup is another family favourite - held traditionally on the third Saturday in October, this is one race meeting which actively welcomes families.
For year round favourites our national parks are amongst the most popular attractions for families. They attract very strong repeat visits by families, many of which camp at Girraween National Park. To learn more click here www.australiannationalparks.com/queensland/giraween/default.htm
